A Lady’s Guide to Mauritius
Mauritius is a charming island located in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Although there are distinct seasons of summer and winter on the island, the overall climate and temperature is warm and tropical. This makes it the ideal destination for travelers who are searching for warmth, beaches and a tropical atmosphere. Females traveling to Mauritius can feel confident that the destination is safe and inviting, even for solo travelers. However, it is important to realize that few people explore the entire island on their own during a visit. Large resort areas are the main place to relax and enjoy a vacation. If you are planning an upcoming trip to Mauritius, here are some top tips and advice for your stay.
1. Choose Your Destination Wisely
The island of Mauritius is home to several large resort areas where most tourists stay during their vacation. The most popular areas are Grand Bay, Blue Bay and Flic en Flac. Think carefully about what you expect from your vacation before you book a hotel in one of these areas. If you would rather see the traditional side of Mauritius and get a feel for authentic everyday life, then the capital city of Port Louis might be best for you. For a chance to dine and enjoy international nightlife, Grand Bay may be best. Blue Bay is less crowded and is ideal for those who just want to get away from it all and relax on a beautiful beach without crowds.
2. Organize Transport in Advance
Most travelers to Mauritius won’t need a visa to visit the island. However, it is smart to check ahead of schedule and ensure that is the case before booking your flight. Almost every traveler will arrive on Mauritius via air and arrive at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. It will take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to get from the airport to your hotel depending on which area you plan to stay in while on the island. A taxi is a great option to get to your hotel if no shuttle is offered, but be sure to use a metered taxi rather than taxi driver who wants to negotiate prices. If you choose to rent a car for your vacation, only opt for those cars which have yellow plates. Black plates are only reserved for private cars that are illegal to rent.
3. Respect Local Customs
Few travelers will have any problems with the customs and culture while visiting Mauritius, but if you leave the resort complex it is wise to keep a few things in mind. If you visit any churches or shrines, show respect in this primarily Hindu nation by dressing conservatively. Women in particular should not dress provocatively while in the city of Port Louis or in rural areas.
4. Stay Safe
Many women visit Mauritius each year on their own or in groups and have no problems with safety or the law. By using common sense there should be no issue. Avoid walking around at night outside of your hotel complex and be sure not to carry valuables with you when alone. Drug use is penalized harshly in Mauritius, so avoid even recreational use and have prescriptions for any medicine you take during your trip.
By following these guidelines, female travelers can feel safe and enjoy their relaxing vacations on the beautiful Indian Ocean beaches of Mauritius.
