The Philippines: The forgotten beach destination

It has been nearly a year and a half since the deadly Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc on The Philippines in November 2013. After much support from surrounding nations, the country was in the midst of rebuilding when it was hit again in December 2014 by Typhoon Hagupit. Many would say the Philippines gets more than its fair share of disasters, but what we will fail to point out and focus on at times is the fact the Philippines is beautiful, tropical country that deserves a closer look by travelers seeking a wondrous beach destination.

Before we get too deep into the destination, we would be remiss not to mention you should always refer to the U.S. Department of State for any travel warnings, including specific locations to avoid within countries to increase health and safety.

That being said, the Philippines offers travelers many options to explore, relax, unwind and simply take in its beauty. In the past, we’ve posted on this destination a time or two:

Roasted Pig and Hanging Rice

Ever tried native filipino food?  In the Philippine culture, celebrations are not considered complete without the roasted pig. This pork delicacy, commonly known as lechon by the locals, is the highlight of every Filipino holiday. Every birthday, wedding, baptism, fiesta or any other special event will always have this crispy-skinned beauty on the table as the king of the food preparation.

Villa Escudero is a popular resort that offers various attractions for tourists who are seeking an excitingnatural travel experience with lots of memorable moments. Beyond doubt, Labasin Falls waterfall restaurant is the most unusual of them. People are dining while the water is running on their feet, and most visitors say that this feeling reminds them about the beauty of nature and majesty of the untouched places.

A Week in the Island of Boracay

Boracay is a small, tropical island located at the tip of Panay Island in the Visayas region. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines because of its beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue waters. It was once a private retreat for travelers who wanted to get away and relax. Now, it has become a tourist hotspot rivaling some of the best beaches in the world. Both local and foreign tourists flock to this island yearly to indulge themselves in a few days of relaxation and fun.

Isn’t Boracay beautiful? After all, Luxury Travel Magazine listed it as one of the elite playgrounds of the rich and famous, “The island of Boracay may not yet provoke the same envious squeals as Saint Tropez, Bora Bora or The Maldives, but this Filipino jewel, best known for its immaculate white beaches and tranquil waters, is already a magnet for globe-trotting celebrities.”

Aside from sightings such as Brad and Angelina in Boracay and Bravo TV sending two of their shows (that we are aware of), The Real Housewives of Melbourne and Atlanta, to vacation in the Philippines recently, the Philippines offers a plethora of things to do, see and eat. Two of our faves are hiking and the beach.

In the Philippines, you have your choice of several excellent hiking locations such as:

1. Mount Panotoan in the Cordilleras region

2. Mount Pinatubo in the Central Luzon region

3. Mount Makiling in the Southern Tagalog region

4. the Chocolate Hills of Bohol in the Visayan Islands

5. Mount Parker in the Southern Mindanao region

6. Mount Isarog in the Bicol Region

Some of these mountains are active volcanoes. Some of the areas of not for the faint of heart, but if hiking is on your bucket list of experiences, then what better place than to check it off your list in the Philippines.

Perhaps hiking isn’t ‘your thing’, and you simply want to relax on the beach or take a deep water dive in the ocean. The Philippines offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world with pink, white or black sand. Aside for the island of Boracay mentioned above, you can visit any of the following beach areas and more during a trip to the Philippines.

1. The most popularly mentioned is El Nido, where the final scenes of the Bourne Legacy were shot.

2. For lush, white beaches head to Samal, Davao.

3. The Forgotten Island of Limbones in Manila Bay are perfect for divers.

4.  For luxury without the crowds, visit Bantayan Island, Cebu. One would also head to Cebu for awesome dive sites.

5. If pink sand is your style, heard to Great Santa Cruz Island.

    1. When someone mentions visiting the Philippines it is usually a) a scientist heading to Manila or b) an expat who needs to make their ‘stay’ requirements before moving onto another country. Lol. It would be nice to hear more people go for leisure if they can get passed the long flight they have to endure.
